The 10th Kingdom

This epic 10-hour miniseries from the Emmy-winning writer of Gulliver s Travels was a ratings bust on television, but on video and DVD, where it can be enjoyed at one s leisure, it has a better chance to cast its magical spell. Kimberly Williams has never been more enchanting than as Virginia, a waitress who still lives with her janitor father (John Larroquette) and yearns for something exciting to happen to her. Her wish comes true when she and her father are transported from New York City into a dimension that, with apologies to Rod Serling, can only be called the Fairy Tale Zone, nine kingdoms populated by characters from fairy tales of yore. They team up with a dog who s really a prince--Wendell, grandson of Snow White--changed into canine form by the evil Queen (Dianne Wiest), who plots to usurp Wendell s throne. Father, daughter, and his royal dogness are relentlessly pursued through the nine kingdoms by the Troll King (Ed O Neill) and his three bumbling and horrible children, and the conflicted Wolf (Scott Cohen), who is allied with the Queen but, with the aid of some Oprah-esque self-help books, tames his inner beast and falls in love with Virginia. The 10th Kingdom is a special effects extravaganza. There is indeed, as one character marvels, magic to behold here. But despite the Hallmark brand name and the presence of a grown-up Snow White (Camryn Manheim) and Cinderella (Ann-Margret), bewitched animals, magic mirrors, and trolls, this is not kid s stuff. It can get scary, surprisingly violent, and quite intense, you know, just like real fairy tales. --Donald Liebenson

be warned - There are two versions available on VHS. The original VHS advertised during the airing of the mini series on TV was great, all VHS copies released later(that I have found) have been highly edited to the point that at times I found the story line dificult to follow, confusing and in general a disappointment. I have yet to see it on DVD but hopfully it s complete. Deppending on the maturity level of your child or the maturity level you wish to encourage, this is not a kids movie, but is it realy any worse than sitting them down to watch shrek or bambi. Yes there is adult content, yes there is violence, and although I don t remember any actual swearing, they came up with some amusing alternatives. The general air of the movie is the funny light-heartedness of the brother grimms fairy tales we all know and love, but it also has parts that remind us that the original tales were not intended for children. Little red riding hood and the wolf did a wee bit more than just talk and pick flowers on their way to grandma s house.

The one and only movie I can watch 100+ times! - Before I start, I ve found a couple spelling and grammar errors in some reviews here. Very annoying to see, especially since I m fifteen (on mum s account) and I could point them out.The 10th Kingdom is just a magnificent movie all round. The cast is phenomenal, everyone fits just right! I was in London when I saw the mini series on TV and my family and I left before we could see the end, so we bought the six hour tape (which is missing four hours). I would definitely recommend this excellent film to anyone over the age of eleven or twelve. Some parts of the movie are a bit mature for younger children...and I m sure most of them wouldn t be able to appreciate the movie as much as they could since the plot line might confuse them a little. It s best to wait till they re of a certain age where they can easily watch, understand and enjoy it. As for adults, this movie is a must-see and even if you ve already seen it once or twice...trust me, once or twice is not enough! I ve watched this movie over 30 times at least. Of course, you must be thinking What, is she crazy? Doesn t she have anything better to do? Well, obviously I do but that doesn t keep me from popping that tape into the VCR.Hopefully you found my review helpful! :)

Coroption - The special effects are greate and so were the acting, yet was it really a good idea to make a movie of fairy tales like that. Some times it was scary, and other times downright desturbing. Today s fairy tales are ment to be for fun and NOT scary.

It combines beautiful scenery with great actors (Ann-Margret, John Larroquet, Kimberly Williams, Scott Cohen, Dianne Wiest and more) and incorporates the stories of Cinderella, Snow White and The Seven Dwarves, Rumpelstilskin, Rapunzel, Jack and the Beanstalk and more. This the ultimate fairytale!The Tenth Kingdom has drama, action, suspense, mystery, romance, horror and comedy. It is incredibly well written, so real and funny. Some of the characters (ie. Relish the Troll King) and events (ie. violence, murder, and war) of The Tenth Kingdom may be very frightening for younger viewers. The best way to watch this movie is to stay up all night to enjoy it all. Without a doubt, this is my favourite movie of all time!

Cinderella, Snow White and The Seven Dwarves, Rumpelstilskin, Rapunzel, Jack and the Beanstalk and more. It is the ultimate movie with all the fairytales combined! The best way to watch this movie is to stay up all night (if you can) to catch it all. It is incredibly well written, so real and funny. Without a doubt, this is my favourite movie of all time!
